Project Turbo

What is Project Turbo?
Project Turbo is a senior design project for UNT. Students were tasked by the school to create a piece of equipment and accompanying lab experiments to demonstrate fluid mechanics and heat transfer principles.

The Product
The Equipment
Features
-
Pressure, thermal, and flowrate sensors.
-
A pump, turbine generator, and reservoir.
-
An set of interchangeable pipe loops of varying insulation. Would support additional pipe loops in the future.

The Labs
Pump efficiency
-
Calculate pump head and efficiency
-
Produce plots using head, flow rate and efficency
-
Check for cavitation
-
Draw conclusions about operation
Turbine Efficiency
-
Calculate head loss and efficiency
-
Produce plots using flow rate and turbine efficiency
-
Draw conclusions about operation
Moody Flowcharts
-
Calculate head loss due to pipe friction
-
Calculate the Reynold's number for the pipe
-
Determine the friction factor for the pipe
Insulation
-
Calculate heat loss due to conduction for differing amounts of insulation
-
Determine the effectiveness of the insulation
