Project                Turbo

What is Project Turbo?

Project Turbo is a senior design project for UNT.  Students were tasked by the school to create a piece of equipment and accompanying lab experiments to demonstrate fluid mechanics and heat transfer principles.

ABOUT
PRODUCT

The Product

The Equipment

Features

  • Pressure, thermal, and flowrate sensors.

  • A pump, turbine generator, and reservoir.

  • An set of interchangeable pipe loops of varying insulation.  Would support additional pipe loops in the future.

The Labs

Pump efficiency

  • Calculate pump head and efficiency

  • Produce plots using head, flow rate and efficency

  • Check for cavitation

  • Draw conclusions about operation

Turbine Efficiency

  • Calculate head loss and efficiency

  • Produce plots using flow rate and turbine efficiency

  • Draw conclusions about operation

Moody Flowcharts

  • Calculate head loss due to pipe friction

  • Calculate the Reynold's number for the pipe

  • Determine the friction factor for the pipe

Insulation

  • Calculate heat loss due to conduction for differing amounts of insulation

  • Determine the effectiveness of the insulation
